  • Ontario Works, but still needs a few repairs.

    Wednesday, October 7, 2009
    Ok,

FYI, Ontario Works, besides being evil, is basically Ontario's Welfare system.

So I'm not on OW, but I work in an environment where many of my clients are on OW, and might I add, STRUGGLING on OW, and I also have a couple friends fighting the good fight as well.

One thing that irks me out about Ontario Works, is the fact that they are passing out LIMITED RESOURCES to people who waste them more than deserving clients! I know my fair share of honest OW clients, but there are some that haven't worked a day in their life, have their kids in subsidized daycare AND DONT WORK, and they frequent the good ol' food bank while they just bought a new flat screen for their living room.

I have a friend on OW that actually wants to get out there and get a job and support herself and her child, but the fact remaining is that sub-daycare is sparse. I MEAN SPPPAARRSEE.

Another thing that drives me nuts about OW is the fact that rent prices in Guelph, no word of a lie, are at the VERY CHEAPEST $830 a month for a two bedroom. So what does OW give to those people to pay for rent? HALF of $830!!! How in gods name can you be on OW and live with a roof over your head? I'll tell you how. You have to choose between ROOF and FOOD.

I understand the strife we're facing in corporate Canada right now, and I understand the backlash it's caused to our middle class family, making them less than low-income families. But honestly government, how can OW help a poor woman and child without at least paying their rent? THANK GOD for child tax and that other babble, because if not, said OW mothers would not be able to even afford the roof over their heads. It also doesn't help if you have a dead beat dad on the side not paying for his kid. EFF that.

I know we’re facing hell in a corporate-tied basket, and that people are suffering, money, jobs, real estate, plummeting, but we need to get a better action plan. Somehow.

Fail Rating? A six on the fail-o-meter scale.

I guess I'm happy we have something in place, but it just doesn't make sense is all..
