  • Skinny Minni or Fatty Patty? A War Waged on the Thin-dom

    Saturday, May 8, 2010
I just happened to come across this blog, and I admit, its old, dating back to the old Spain skinny model ban of '06, but I won't lie... I was looking for pictures of plus size models, and of course, the mother of all plus size model pictures happens to be the absolutely LOVELY (in my fat opinion) size 20 model Jean-Paul Gaultier used in one of his shows in Madrid. I actually believe it was the opening show, but my mind could be failing me.

As much as I think this woman looks absolutely flawless, happy and self-confident... part of me hurts because I think what Gaultier was trying to pull of with this picture is the fact that he was using her weight as a protest towards the skinny model ban.

This woman is beautiful, because she loves herself.  Yes, she is clearly obese, yes, she probably has cellulite and dimples where they "aren't suppose to be". Yes, she might be setting herself up for heart disease or diabetes etc. etc, other things that come along with being overweight. But I bet at that moment, and moments following that, she felt absolutely stunning. And because she felt that way, it transposes into the fact that, indeed, she is absolutely stunning.

But, on the side of normality. I think that this kind of modelling is as bad as the rail-thin models are, based on the fact that we can't just pick a NORMAL size girl to tramp down the runways in Milan and Madrid?

Ok, good point you say, but what constitutes normal?

By no means, is this poor creature normal. Nor is she pretty. NOR does she have any boobs, and I bet you she doesn't have a butt either.
I don't want to rain on this poor girls parade, because I'm sure her agency lets her eat one piece of celery per day thinking they are looking out for her, but you know she can't be healthy.  Just like when you look at Gaultier's plus sized model, you know shes probably not healthy.

We need to find an average healthy medium.  We need to find the middle of the spectrum, and raise up those normal size girls, and give them the praise and reassurance they deserve.  I don't condone obesity, even if I am myself, obese. I also don't condone being rail-thin, as it can't possibly be healthy. I am healthy, but I am big. I wasn't always healthy, but with a balanced diet, exercise and movement, I am a big girl, that's healthy.

So who dictates average? Today, I'm going to say Statistics Canada (2005) is going to dictate as such, and even though the figures are five years old, its all us Canadians have put out since then.

Stats Canada goes on to say that the average Canadian Woman is approximately 5.34 feet tall, and weights 153lbs.  That's a BMI (Body Mass Index) of approximately 27.1 respectively.  According to the BMI levels, this constitutes that the average Canadian woman is slightly overweight. (BMI 25 -29.9 is overweight).

So at that size, I'd say the woman is a size 14.... which is what society would call "plus size".  Want to see what a real size 14 woman looks like? Take a look at plus-size model Christina Schmidt! You see her face and body in The Bay quite a bit.  I think this woman is absolutely flawless. She's a size 14, has size 9 feet, and is brunette. Some would say she had everything going against her in this day in age.

The one thing we can all agree on, is that this girl is beautiful.  She's signed with B&M Models in Toronto, as a plus size model.

All I'm saying about the numerous magazines, fashion shows etc. that are featuring plus-size models, are on the right track. And no, I don't say that because I am overweight, or because some of the most important people in my life are overweight. I say that because I think we need to give little girls growing up someone to look up too that isn't comparable with a stick, or a bus.

Sometimes its nice to visit la-la land, but we really need to get our heads back into reality and face the facts. 9 year old girls are dieting people!  It just isn't right.

But having that said.  It doesn't matter if your a size 5, or a size 25, if you feel beautiful, and healthy, then the more power to ya.  Not only do we need positive REALISTIC views for our young girls, we need confidence as well.

And for god sakes, can someone work on telling all the teenage boys its not ok to wear their sisters skinny jeans?
